The Stolz Family Project is part of Family Trees DNA .

Since its inception, in April of 2000, Family Tree DNA has been associated with the Arizona Research Labs, led by Dr. Michael Hammer, one of the world's leading authorities in the field of Genetics. As of 9 September, 2007, Family Tree DNA hits new milestones solidifying its leadership with the largest DNA database in the field of Genetic Genealogy with 158 799 records:

What is DNA?  DNA stand for deoxyribonucleic acid, the chemical inside the nucleus of all cells that carries the genetic instructions for making living organism.   DNA is the hereditary material in humans and almost every other living organism.

One of its important properties is its ability to make copies of itself, or replicate. Each strand of DNA serves as the pattern for duplicating its sequence.  When cells divide, this replication is important because new cells need to have an exact copy of the DNA from the old cell.

DNA's PART in Genealogy.   DNA is quickly becoming an important part of the study of genealogy. While DNA alone cannot be used for genealogical purposes, its combination with the two traditional sources for family history research — oral history and recorded documents — can reveal long-forgotten connections or it can break down even the toughest BRICK WALL.

DNA TEST.  The two DNA Tests used by family historians are the Y-chromosome (for male lines) and the mitochondrial mtDNA (for female lines). Common tests used for testing close relationships include paternity, maternity, forensic, grandparentage, reconstruction (close relatives), siblingship, and twin zygosity.

An excellent web site well worth a read

The Paternal DNA, passed from father to son, tests the Y-chromosome,
which is only found in males and is useful in verifying common ancestry.

(Test can be paid by Invoice to FTDNA - no need to use a Credit Card on Line)

If you are considering DNA Testing we recomend a minimum of 25 Markers, but naturally there is the budget to consider.

Understanding your DNA Results and Genetic Distance

-----------------------------------------------------
If you compare the 12 marker result to someone else who does not have the same surname, but the scores match, you are most likely not recently related. When we use the term recently related, we are talking about a time frame within the last 1000 years or 40 generations, a time depth that accommodates the earliest known use of surnames.

As you are aware Hec had a 67 Marker DNA test but there are only 66 Markers in the Results.  Our 425 Marker had what is known as a "null" result.  This in itself is very exciting. We have been asked to join a Special "NULL425" Group which has to date only 53 Members.  Although we all have different Surnames it proves that we came from the one ancestor, and are part of a cluster from central GermanyThis is why we ordered 3 additional tests DYF371x   Y-GGAAT-1B07 and DYF399x.

12 Marker Test - Total = 998 - Genetic Distance - 12/12 = 11/12 = No possible connection after this point.

37 Marker Test - Total = 4 - Genetic Distance - 35/37 = 34/37 = 33/37 = 32/37 = Recomended cut off point

67 Marker Test - Total = 9 - Genetic Distance - 62/67 = 60/ 67 = 59/67 = 58/67 = Recomended cut off point
